Learning What Is Solar Power:

When people ask what is solar power, the answer is that it relates to the sun and
the energy its rays produce. This power has been around since the beginning of time
and is used by plants, animals and mankind. It is the energy, or strength, from the
sun that enables plants to grow, the weather to be warm and mankind to survive.

History will show that at one time there were people who worshiped the sun as a God.
In addition, early man used this natural process for drying and heating in his daily
living. It first came to the attention of today's scientists and engineers, as a
possible important energy source, in the 1950's but was considered too expensive and
ineffective to pursue. As time progressed and panels were developed to capture the
sun's rays its potential as a serious energy source became noticeable.

There are many different kinds of energy but the advantage of the sun is that there
is no cost involved, with the exception of the units to capture the energy, there is
no pollution and it does not require the upkeep needed by regular, man-made units of
energy. Solar power consists of capturing the energy of the sun's rays, by way of
photo cells, and using them to produce heat and electricity.

In learning what is Solar power, one will find that it is actually classified as
passive and active. Passive is capturing the energy with a simple structure that
involves windows, tanks or other items which simply absorb the sun's rays and heat
whatever is inside. Active is when things such as panels are used and the rays are
converted into energy.

At this point we are just at the beginning of realizing the outstanding energy that
can be provided by sun rays when properly channeled. Panels that have been developed
so far, while effective, are still expensive to make and install. Other problems being
worked on are how to save the energy provided on sunny days so it can be used when the
sun is not shining. Also, there is often the problem of shade from trees and other
buildings which block sun rays.

There are a number of different ideas now being developed to overcome these problems
and allow these panels to effectively store energy, for electricity, which can be used
after sunset. Protection from damage from moisture is another area being studied. Many
interesting concepts have been developed or are in the experimental stage regarding
future uses of this energy.

Shingles for the roof of buildings have been developed, from material to attract sun
rays, and cannot be detected from the real thing. There are also companies who are
developing solar platforms which will apply the idea of this power in entirely new
areas. One, for example, is having solar quantum dots mixed in with paint for the
outside of the home. This would enable you to virtually 'paint' on your energy panels.

Solar energy is not just confined to houses and panels. It is now being incorporated
into things such as cell phones, iPODS, sports equipment and many other items that are
used every day. It is an energy platform that is only confined by the imagination and
it is expected that one day it will be the major source of energy throughout the world.
Learning what is solar power is a fascinating experience in learning about the natural
resources available for human use.
