Win The Global Warming

It seems as if the environment has gone crazy; weather patterns are abnormal and
average temperatures are gradually warming. Our world is undergoing global warming
and many of us wonder is it possible to win the global warming challenges.

The main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide. The past fifty years has seen a
progressively thicker layer of the pollutant carbon dioxide build up in earth's
atmosphere where it traps heat to cause a rise in temperatures (global warming).

The United States is the biggest offender in atmospheric carbon dioxide pollution.
Vehicle emissions and coal-fired power plant combine to emit 4 billion tons of
pollution annually. While the US represents only 4% of the population of the world
it emits 25% of the world's global warming pollutants. The United States emits more
pollutants than any other country; more than India, Japan and China combined.

The United States is a technologically advanced nation and as such, should be leading
other nations in efforts to reverse the effects of pollutants. Global warming is an
extremely serious subject. Life as we know it may be at risk. This is not something that
we can afford to take lightly or with a lack of planning and consideration.

As with any other sensitive subject there is often heated debate about global warming;
whether global warming really exists, what are the causes of global warming and who
should be responsible for cleaning up our air. There is plenty of denial, finger
pointing and blame referring to global warming when in reality the entire world
population needs to work together to find a solution before it is literally too late.

There are significant signs validating the effects of global warming. Polar bears
live on ice; their territory is literally melting away and the very existence of this
species of bear is threatened. Heat waves have become more extreme, hurricane numbers
are increasing in frequency and strength, ocean temperatures are rising and wildfires
are increasing in frequency. Scientists rightly warned some time ago that global warming
would increase the intensity of storms, cause draught and have an adverse effect on
weather patterns.

It is not too late to stop global warming. As a nation we Americans need to stand up
and urge our government to adopt stringent emission laws to assure a reduction in
atmospheric pollution. Industries worldwide should be forced to lower their emissions
in order to market their products. Voluntary programs have not led to reduced emissions
so we must place mandatory restrictions on global warming pollutants.

Individuals can contribute significantly to the anti-global warming effort. Use only
energy-efficient appliances, buy a hybrid or electric vehicle, use renewable energy
(for instance bio-fuels), combine trips and save gas. The best thing individuals can do
to stop global warming is speak up! Speak up by writing letters to government officials,
speak up by shopping at green stores and by using only green products and last but
certainly not least, speak with your vote. Wondering if it is possible to win global
warming challenges will not save our world, speaking up just might.
