Natural Resources Of Our Planet Are Running Out
A question that everyone one on this planet is asking themselves is, are natural
resources of our planet are running out? The high rate at which we are consuming
natural resources has resulted in mankind eating up the planet. Study after study
on the way that we are consuming natural resources shows that there is much to be
concerned about.
Without a doubt, the human race is consuming far more of its natural resources than
is good for them and for the Earth. This kind of consumption has resulted in a kind
of ecological debt that is growing worse with each passing year. We are currently,
and have been doing so for the past decade or so, living far beyond are means and are
running up an ecological debt that will spell certain ruin if it is not controlled in time.
Many studies have been conducted regarding what is known as ecological footprint which
is a system that measures the amount of water and land the human population has to produce
and the amount of resources it consumes in order to survive. The results show that we are
using up our natural resources far too much and are in the process actually liquidating
much of the natural resources of our planet.
There is no harm if we use up our natural resources to survive and as long as this
happens in the short term there is not much to be worried about. However, when natural
resources are consumed wantonly over a longer period of time, the results will be
catastrophic as we cannot afford to use up our oceans, forests as well as agricultural
lands upon which the world economy is so dependent.
We have now been warned that the planet is fast running out of natural resources and
room. In these modern times, we have not been able to control our habit of plundering
the Earth and its precious natural resources. Unless we are able to colonize outer space
in the near future, our very existence on the planet will be at risk.
At the rate at which the Earths population is growing, there is certainly an immediate
need for man to colonize at least two planets in the next five decades, especially if we
continue to plunder the Earths natural resources at the present rate. We are, without a
doubt, plundering these resources at a far greater rate than is good for us. We need to
colonize at least two planets that are of the same size as our Earth; otherwise, our
existence cannot be guaranteed on this planet.
More than one third of the natural world has already been destroyed by man and this has
happened in just the last 30 years. Unless these high consumption rates are controlled,
we will not have the ability to survive on the planet for too long.
Seas are being emptied out rapidly as we wantonly fish for food and forests which are so
useful in absorbing carbon dioxide are also being destroyed leading to scarcities. Unless
mankind learns to curb its wanton lifestyle, we will have no other choice than to move to
a new planet. This is not likely to happen in the near future as we have not been able to
identify another habitable planet in outer space.
The overexploitation of natural resources on the planet has resulted in a collapse of cod
stock in the North Atlantic and these stocks were estimated to be just 60,000 tons in the
year 1995 as compared to 264,000 tons in the year 1970.
That is not all, because the forest cover on the planet has already started to sink by about
twelve percent and biodiversity in the oceans has been depleted by 33 percent while the rate
at which the freshwater ecosystem is being depleted stands at a staggering 55 percent.
This level of deterioration is certainly shocking and should warn us that unless we accept that
our current exploitation of the natural resources is leading us on the path of self destruction
we will not find the will to stop such patterns of consumption.
So, the answer to the question, are natural resources of our planet are running out, is that we
are certainly running out of natural resources. In fact, it is not just the human race that is
endangered but mammals, reptiles, birds and of course fish are also in grave danger of being
wiped off the face of this planet. It is time to heed the warnings that are being sounded and
we should as one take measures to stop and control the wanton proliferation of natural
resources on our precious planet.
