How Do Solar Panels Work
With so much emphasis on going green, many people are looking for ways to produce energy for their
homes and appliances that are both clean and cost-effective. Arguably one of the most popular
methods of producing clean energy is the solar panel, which converts energy from the sun into
electricity. However, not many people know how Solar Panels work or, in some cases, why they don’t.
Contemporary solar panels are usually made of silicon, mostly because in its purest state it is
a nearly perfect conduit for transferring electrons.
Silicon has 14 electrons in total, but only four in its outermost shell, as opposed to the eight
that would normally fit. What this means is that silicon can carry four more electrons and that
it is desperate to have them. However, two silicon plates wouldn’t work for a panel.
They would simply use each other’s four electrons to form a solid eight and then no electricity
would be generated. Solar Panels use two other elements, one with five electrons in its outer
shell and one with three. One plate is formed using Silicon and the five electron element.
The other plate is formed using Silicon and the three electron element.
With the “5” plate, there is a spare ninth electron present, which gives the plate a negative charge.
With the “3” plate, there is room for that spare electron, so this plate has a positive charge.
On its own, the electron will never separate and move toward the other plate.
When sunlight hits the “5” plate, photons from the light allow the spare electron to break
free and it is immediately drawn to the “3” plate. However, that spare electron never reaches
the “3” plate, because highly conductive wires draw the electrons away. Every time this cycle
repeats itself, the panel generates electricity. Not all solar panels work this way, but these
types are the most common today.
For the above mentioned process to work, solar panels require an almost direct path of sunlight,
so the placement of the panels and local weather conditions are critical to how much energy can
be taken in. However, contrary to popular belief, they don’t need to be high in the sky to function.
They merely have to be at the correct angle with the sun. The only real problem is that solar panels
produce a relatively small amount of energy, so they have to be grouped together to power large,
more complex device.
If you think that a solar panel may be the right choice for your home.
in the long run, Solar Energy is the best answer to produce Electricity.
