Discussing The Causes Of Global Warming
There is a huge debate throughout the world regarding the causes of Global Warming.
The argument is that society is causing a change in the weather that is harmful to
human life because of the way they are living. It is claimed that there will be
'horrific consequences' if people do not make certain changes. Those who oppose this
point of view declare that things that happen are a natural evolution of the planet
and its atmosphere.
Harmful emissions into the atmosphere from the use of fossil fuels has been a major
complaint. This goes from an oil refinery to landfill emissions and everything in
between. As a result a number of solutions to reduce these emissions have been put
forth and are now being used.
There are many different causes of Global Warming listed by those who are convinced
this is happening. Number one on the list is carbon dioxide from power plants which
uses natural gas, coal and oil, with coal being the biggest contributor. It is stated
that this releases 40% of all carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere.
Cars, trucks and airplanes are next on the list by releasing carbon into the air
through the fuel that they burn. At the current time, electric and hybrid cars are
being introduced but this does not seem like an immediate solution due to the fact
that there are millions of these vehicles all over the world that would have to be
replaced. Having an alternate fuel, that would work equally well in the various modes
of transportation, seems the best solution. Biofuel plants have been put into operation
but, at the present time, it is too expensive to produce to be practical.
Buildings and houses also fall into the Global Warming category because of their
dependence on oil, gas, coal and electricity which, in turn sends emissions into
the air either directly or indirectly. Methane, which is stored in the oceans and
in ice, is released into the air when an increase in temperature occurs, which is
also being blamed for global warming and the list goes on and on.
Points given by those who believe this theory are heat waves, decline of the Artic
polar ice cap, droughts, severe dust storms and so forth. Others claim this has
nothing to do with how people are living and the argument continues. However, in
the meantime, steps have been taken that have shown some progress.
A big stride toward eliminating use of fossil fuels (which is being slowly depleted
anyway), is the use of the sun's energy for heat. This has been done by use of
solar panels which capture the rays to heat buildings and water. They have also been
used to create electricity and have found to be very effective. It is expected that
this manner of conserving energy will advance rapidly over the next few years and be
used by all new construction projects.
Re-cycling has also been a project which has been widely accepted and reduces the amount
of waste going into land-fills. This is something that is easy to do and the public
has been so completely educated on the subject that it is done automatically. This is
saving land space and assisting in the global warming picture by not burning this material
and sending the fumes into the atmosphere.
Wind farms have proved an excellent way in which to produce electricity which previously
required fossil fuels and gives off no emissions into the atmosphere. This is a new
industry, just getting off the ground, but is proving itself as an excellent way to make
use of natural forces, the wind, to produce the electricity needed for homes and
businesses throughout the world. Currently constructed on land there is now a plan to
construct platforms in the ocean for these farms.
While it is felt the causes of Global Warming is known, many people are not convinced
that it is even occurring. In addition, if true, there is the problem of having a world
-wide response. The people in many parts of the world are still in what is considered a
rather primitive state. How does one convince them that there is danger to the atmosphere
when all they can think about is providing food and other necessities to keep them and
their family alive?
In addition, a number of people point out the decline and disappearance of the dinosaur.
They feel that any changes are a natural occurrence in the evolution of the world. However,
there is no doubt that today's society is wasteful in their use of the natural and man-
made products that are available. If nothing else, the Global Warming discussion
has brought about changes for the better and have made many people change ineffective
habits they previously had in their lifestyle.
